NAME: Arya Stark
ALIAS: No One
CANON: A Song of Ice and Fire
AGE: 13 (aged up from 9-11, depending on canon point.)
GENDER: Female (she/her/hers)
OCCUPATION: Student
AU BACKGROUND:
Arya is the third trueborn child of the Stark family (fourth child in age, including the adopted Jon), and the second girl. Although the Starks were previously a noble English family that lived in the north of the country, they were no longer. However, they were still quite rich, and as such Arya grew up without a particular want. Her parents, Catelyn and Ned, were very insistent that their children learn that being rich did not mean they could ignore their duties, and so Arya grew up as a young child knowing the debt she owed both to those beneath her and the Starks that had come before her. She had a great respect for her family as a little girl -- she has always been one to take after her brothers, and as a little girl would attempt to follow them around and imitate them, particularly Jon. She took a great liking to him especially and he didn't really seem to mind.. At about six or seven, their mother attempted to teach the Arya some of the domesticated arts, as an attempt to bond, mother-daughter style. And Arya was…well, after she attempted to feed her last embroidery project to her dog, Catelyn decided that maybe fencing lessons were better for Arya in the long run than horrible halfhearted embroidered pillowcases.
So Arya enrolled in a fencing academy, and took a great liking to the sport -- she was actually pretty good at it! Certainly better at swordwork than at needlework, at any rate. Around the same time, all of the Stark children were given the gift of a dog -- a rather large breed of dog, that might have had some wolf ancestors at some point -- to care for on their own. Ned Stark thought that it would be a good show of character, if all of the children could take care of their dogs by themselves. Arya was immediately smitten, naming her Nymeria after a women from an obscure eastern European fable. Nymeria and Arya would go everywhere together, often getting into all sorts of trouble together. Her dog even seemed to take after her in temperament, becoming mischievous and sometimes unruly when faced with things that she didn't like (such as baths and being chained outside after dark). But that didn't matter to Arya; she loved Nymeria as much as she loved her own family.
At about the age of nine for Arya, both Jon and Robb began displaying strange powers, unlike anything they had ever displayed -- mutant powers. Unable to make their children hide their powers from an outside world, and desiring a life of relative normality for them, Catelyn and Ned made the hard decision to send both of their older children off to Genosha, to attend a special school for mutants. After they leave, Arya became relatively miserable, or as miserable as a nine year old girl could be; Robb and Jon were two of her favorite siblings, and while Sansa, Rickon and Bran were still her family, they weren't the ones she would frequently follow around and ask all her questions of. Instead of dwelling on this, Arya turned her sadness into anger -- she threw herself into fencing to get rid of some of her anxiousness, but somehow still argued with not only Sansa but her mother as well. It was only a few months until Sansa also started showing signs of having mutant powers, but hers resulted in some unfortunate effects: Sansa began to be viciously bullied in school. There was nothing Arya could do, really -- just sit, watch, and seethe about her older sister being made fun of. Arya making fun of Sansa was one thing, but someone else was just unheard of. Eventually their parents shipped Sansa off to Genosha for her own safety, so that no one would physically harm her. Once again, Arya was moody. But this time, she had more than getting into arguments and fencing to satisfy her.
She had a plan.
It took a few months -- well, more like the better part of a year -- to get everything in order. She knew that she had to get better at fencing before she could implement anything. It was at the end of that year that Arya began going through not only growth spurts, but also other changes. Her first experience with becoming a shadow was actually an accident; she needed to hide from Bran while playing hide and seek, and accidentally slipped, turning into the shadow of a long vase in the process. Her first experience of sharing a mind with Nymeria was an accident as well, and happened when she was dreaming -- as she slept, Arya learned that she could travel with Nymeria wherever she roamed during that time. With these new skills, Arya finally put her plan into motion.
One day after school, she asked her parents to allow her to stay late -- presumably for detention, which happened often enough in Arya's life that they didn't question her reasoning. But instead of going to detention, which she had made up, she actually followed the bullies that had made Sansa's life so miserable by stalking their shadows. When they were alone, she sprung up out of the shadows to attack them with rocks and her fists, giving them a sound beating. The bullies left crying for their parents and Arya was spotted with a bloody lip and bloodied fingernails by the school superintendent. Rather than sticking around to be caught, Arya took for the nearest big city, running down back highways and hiding in shadows when she thought someone might find her and take her to jail, or worse, tell her parents and have them be disappointed in her again. So she wandered through Newcastle for three days -- thankfully, Nymeria had caught up with her not long after she ran away from school because of their shared mind ability and kept her safe. Ned finally found her begging on the side of the street for some change and brought her home. Of course, she shouldn't keep a secret from her parents, let alone her father, and explained everything to him. Upset but surprisingly understanding, Ned decided that the best solution would be to send Arya off to Genosha as well, and told her not to repeat her actions at this new school, no matter how horrible the bullies could be.
Arya has been at Genosha for about a year, and lives with her siblings in a house off of Hammer Bay year-round, while their parents continue to live in England. And so far, she's continued to keep her promise -- no beating up bullies. However, she does enjoy spying on people by becoming their shadow, and it's an awfully bad habit. She even uses Nymeria to spy with sometimes, but not so much, because she's worried someone might hurt her dog. Bran, after an accident, has recently joined them at school as well, and Arya isn't quite sure what to make of that. But at least they have almost the entire clan there now, and Arya can keep her family safe from the shadows. When she…can control it. She's not so good at that part. But that's why they're at school, right?
PERSONALITY:
Arya is...a handful, at the very least. Because of her middle-child positioning in the Stark family, she consistently seeks to do things..well, differently. She's not a traditional beauty like her sister Sansa, but no great athlete or warrior like Robb and Jon. So instead of trying to be them, she becomes herself: Arya is quick and sneaky, able to lie effortlessly at the drop of a hat. While this gets her into trouble sometimes, she's quick to worm her way out of situations that could be too worrying -- and this includes running away, if the situation requires it. She's prideful, but there's no pride in dying; Arya can easily put her pride aside if it means that she'll live to see another day or get out of some sort of horrible disciplinary punishment. Not that she doesn't own up to her mistakes occasionally, just...most of the time she'd rather attempt to talk her way out of it, even though it usually digs her into a bigger hole. HOWEVER...the exception is when you add in friends or cherished friends. While Arya is very big on self-preservation, she'll go out of her way to keep those people safe, even killing if it's required of her. She doesn't want thanks for it - it's just something she thinks she should do. Her friends and family are precious to her, and extremely good people. She needs to keep them safe if they are with her.
She can't help but get angry on occasion -- sometimes it's unreasonable, petty anger, like when she gets jealous of her older sister. And sometimes it's extremely deep grudges -- like her planned revenge on Sansa's bullies. Arya can hold grudges for an extremely long time, years if she needs to. Her outlook on justice tends to be extremely black and white, even though her own actions skim the morally grey -- if someone does good things, then they are good. But if someone does bad things, unforgivable things, then they're bad...and bad people deserve their punishment. And the best person to give them those punishments...herself! Of course! Arya isn't above beating someone up in order to teach them a lesson. One might even say she views herself as a deliverer of justice, which is why she isn't concerned with her ambiguous settling between good and evil.
In addition, Arya holds a very solemn pride for her family -- her parents and lineage have instilled in her a pride in being a Stark. She looks up to her family first and foremost, especially Jon, Robb and Ned. They are the moral high ground that she attempts to emulate in her own lopsided way -- because even though she's not necessarily a nice person on occasion, she's a Stark and they can make the tough decisions other people can't. If you insult her family, expect a comeback or five...or maybe a punch thrown at your face! She's big on protecting her family, don't you dare disrespect them. And even though she's envious of Sansa and often makes fun of her for being dumb or a stereotypical girl, she even thinks to protect her when she's pushed to admit it (she doesn't like to, okay? Sansa is weird).
But even though she's very mature for her age, she can also be extremely immature at times. She plays practical jokes and sticks her tongue out and stomps her foot when it suits her. Arya likes being seen as a trouble-maker, not a bad person, and this sort of thing pleases her. She's careful not to do it around her parents, but around anyone else...well, let's just say if you're going to see her, it's probably while she's running around concocting some sort of scheme or plot that will go very badly and then require a lot of explanation.
APPEARANCE: Like So. Arya has no outward mutations that set her apart from non-mutants.
When she is a shadow, she looks like…well, a shadow. Normal, everyday shadow that stretches whenever there's a light source available. Unlike a normal shadow however, she can move independently of the person she's attached to if she's not concentrating on it, so sometimes she looks like herself even when she's pretending to be another person. And in the dark (for those who can see in it), she looks like a 3D shadow Arya -- completely black with no facial features.
POWERS:
Arya is able to become a shadow -- a literal, 2D shadow. And not only can she become a shadow, she can imitate other people's shadows and objects' shadows as well. When she's concentrating, she moves with them as if she were an ordinary shadow. When she's not, she actually looks like Arya in shadow form, no matter who she's trying to stalk. While she's in shadow form, her world turns black and white, and she sees everything from the ground up. But her hearing is excellent, and she can really be used to spy on others. Arya can also move along the ground independent of people, but then she just looks like a moving black blob, and that's not very helpful. When she's in the dark using her powers, she can hear everywhere there is darkness connected to her own.
In addition, Arya is also a warg, or a person who is able to share/control the mind of animals. Currently, she can only do this with her dog Nymeria, but she also has an affinity for cats and can sometimes accidentally slip into the minds of them while she's asleep. But she is best with Nymeria, and can now slip into her dog's mind while she's awake, as well as while she's dreaming.
